I learned what I should and shouldnt do when cutting pie panels out. The best thing I could say is when using a dremel, at least tape off the metal to avoid scratching the dome like I did. Keep the dremel at a medium speed because it tends to jump a bit. Go slow with this and take your time and it will turn out all right.

Polishing the dome, I used Brasso metal polish that I got at the Home Depot in the cleaning section. I applied this with a rag and used #0000 steel wool very lightly to do the polishing in sections so it comes to a nice shine and you can see a visible reflection.
Sanding the 300mm Dome
My approach at sanding the dome used #0000 steel wool pads, and I sanded the dome several times until the glossy sheen was gone, but enough to make it still look older. The end result was very satisfying and was enough that I could polish the dome later on and make it shine. Here is the process used for sanding the dome.
