It’s time to build and R2-D2!

I decided to build an R2D2 like many others have and I’ve come across some great sites that will point you in the right direction. Although this is my first R2 unit that I am building, I wanted to share things that I often found difficult to find because I am a visual person when it comes to learning how to do certain things, and many tutorials I came across where just not what I was looking for. My goal is to show you step by step what I have learned and hope you can prosper from it and build your own droid. I will post videos of the process from a close up point a view with narration and detail, as well as blog entries on the progress being made. There are two websites in which most builders use and you should register at both.

  1. Astromech.net
  2. R2-D2 Builders Club

Here you will find all the information related to plans and tutorials on how to get your droid started.

  1. hello my name is Sergio, I’m from Peru. I am writing this message to tell you that my dream was always to create with my own hands on a R2D2. I would like to help me please to create mine step by step, because, not master English very well and my pages are difficult to translate. Help me fulfill my dream please. I wonder if you can tell me where to start, because I have no plan, no action at all. I hope your help please.

    1. We can help. Join Astromech.net and wait for approval. Until you are approved, read the FAQ section on that website and watch the videos on this site to see how some things are done.

  2. In your building of the template, you used 1/4″ Melamin press board; however, I noticed when you were routing the top and bottom plate, you were using a 3/4″ template with the straight cut router bit that had a ball bear guide on the top of the bit. Is that the only way to do it. Why even cut the 1/4″ Melamin board when you switched over to a 3/4″ template? I”m assuming because of the depth of cut you have to make with your 1″ straight cut router bit. I”m in the middle of using your videos to build my own wooden frame and now I’m stuck. Help!

    1. I discovered it is easier to use 3/4″ as you mentioned because of the router bit. But remember, this is for the templates that have deep pockets needing to be cut out. The middle ring, quarter, and eighth rings, plus wings, can use the MDF or anything that is just an outline cut.
